How to Train a Puppy

Puppy’s INSPIRE visions of sweet snuggles, round puppy bellies being rubbed, puppy breath and adorableness enough to fill your heart.

You rarely envision gnashing sharp puppy teeth, ripped and chewed clothing & furniture, endless howling and crying during the night, poop and pee spots over the house.  As those realities of puppies begin to settle in now that you have this bundle of joy, you realize, “OH MY, I need some help!”  This is the moment that it can really get overwhelming!!

You hop onto your computer and type in PUPPY TRAINING, and now the masses of information almost drowns you. It’s easy to get LOST on the information highway when you want to know where to start with your new bundle of chaos.

So you grab some treats and you teach that puppy to sit, come, stay, etc.  And soon, very soon, you realize that all those treats, sits and comes, didn’t affect your puppy’s state of mind and calm him down and it didn’t affect his actions for the other 23 hours of the day in the life of your puppy.

Here’s the truth- you cannot command calm and you cannot compel acceptance.

You want your puppy to learn how to be safe, sane and civilized and you want your puppy to be happy. And, you don’t have the foggiest notion of where to begin, because where you began didn’t get you where you wanted to be.

At Aly’s Puppy Bootcamp, we often get asked what the best way to train a puppy?

The answer is that we need to train puppies much like their momma’s trained them. Momma told their puppies when they were going to eat, when they would stop eating. She told them to poop here, not there.  She showed them how to play correctly, and when they didn’t, she was the best principal on the playground. She showed them how they were to approach her and how to best get her attention. She let them know when it was time to sleep and wake up.  And she also told her sweet, adorable puppies, “Hey, I don’t want you near me for a minute. I need a break.”

Our entire training philosophy is wrapped around the notion that we train puppies best by implementing strategies that replicate all the things her momma taught her those first 8 weeks of life.

We have trained over 6000 puppies now, and our approach is rooted in more than mere commands to reach the heart and mind of your puppy.  It is never too early or too late to build a healthy foundation for your dog (and family!)

Training Pillars for all Puppies (and dogs!)

The answer to training your puppy is always to build a strong foundation of relationship, obedience, acceptance and a calm mindset. I promise, this is achieved puppy after puppy through the Pillars of Pack Leadership. Our foundation basically teaches you strategies that help you live life with your dog much like your puppy’s momma did it with her.  We teach you the root of the issues you are experiencing and how to affect positive change.

For example, your puppy constantly jumps on you and your kids. You think the issue is jumping. You have read that you should turn your back on your jumping puppy and not give her attention to fix the jumping. Your kids turn their backs, and your puppy only intensifies her attempts!

The real reason your dog feels she can jump on you is because your puppy has not yet learned she needs to respect your space. The root issue is a respect of space issue! The real fix is diving into respect of space issues as you live your daily life, and ultimately, that is what fixes the jumping issue. We start letting her know that we have a HULA HOOP space around our body and she cannot enter it, unless invited in. I see momma dogs doing this all the time with her puppies. We teach you this skill, and once you learn that skill, you will be teaching your puppy respect of space awareness. There are many other skills that help to reinforce the concept of Respect of Space and we teach them all to you in our Pillars of Pack Leadership Academy.

The Academy is a comprehensive, video based course that contains over 35 videos!  This signature online course is the next best thing to in-person training. You will learn everything there is to know about Aly’s Pillars of Pack Leadership foundation and the things you easily can do to teach your puppy how be calm and accepting of your guidance. Here are the five Pillars:

  • Establishing Effective Structure
  • Establishing Effective Rituals
  • Purpose Driven Activities
  • Respect of Space
  • The Human Component

This month, we are conducting a two-week online workshop where Aly and the team guides you through the Pillars of Pack Leadership course. In just two weeks you will have the knowledge to dramatically change your relationship with your puppy or dog and start living life with them in a safe, sane and civilized way. In the course you will receive:

2 weeks in a private Facebook group where you will be personally guided by Aly through her Pillars of Pack Leadership Academy. She will break it all down and answer any questions you have as you move through the material together.

AND the first 5 people to join will get a FREE one-on-one consultation with Aly!

There are always bonus offers and content appropriate to the workshop topic that we love to throw in too!

If you are in need of other training options, there are a variety of ways to train with us.
